I had been dating Tom for almost a year. He had a stable job, but his personality was unpredictable and domineering. He was the type who did whatever he wanted, regardless of my opinions. My dad had warned me that marrying Tom could lead to a tough life. But I loved him and chose to believe his promises to change.

In our year together, Tom had visited my house a few times. However, he believed that until we were married, he was just a “guest.” Even during family gatherings at my house, he would sit on his phone instead of helping out. If something was missing at the table, like a bowl or a condiment, he wouldn’t get up but would call me to fetch it. This behavior increasingly annoyed my mom.

Meeting His Family

Last week, Tom asked me to take time off work to visit his family for the first time. The visit was scheduled for a Tuesday, despite my suggestion to wait until Sunday. Tom insisted because his family was hosting their biggest annual memorial event that day, and he thought it would be a good opportunity for me to “prove” my ability as a future wife.

I reluctantly took the day off. At 5 a.m., Tom picked me up, and we went grocery shopping. He handed me $50, even though the total cost was over $100. When I asked for more money, he got annoyed and said I should cover the difference as a gesture for the occasion.

From morning until noon, I was in the kitchen with his mom, preparing food for the ceremony. Tom, meanwhile, lounged around, sipping coffee and bossing me around whenever he wanted something. I was furious but kept quiet.

A Shocking Revelation

As the day went on, I noticed a pattern. Tom’s father behaved the same way. He strolled around the garden, never lifting a finger to help. Tom’s mom confided in me that she always had to prepare for days leading up to events like this because no one ever helped her. I already had a bad feeling about this family dynamic.

Around 11 a.m., Tom’s father came into the kitchen and asked if lunch was ready. His wife explained that she hadn’t cooked lunch because she was busy with the preparations for the afternoon ceremony. She suggested he find something small to eat since the feast would be ready by 4 p.m.

Upon hearing this, Tom’s father became furious. His face turned red as he pointed at her and shouted, “You’re useless! You can’t even manage to prepare a simple lunch!”

I was stunned. Here was a man who had done nothing all morning, berating his wife in front of me for something so trivial. It was a harsh wake-up call. If I married Tom, my life would likely mirror his mother’s—endlessly cooking, cleaning, and enduring contempt from my husband. This family seemed to believe that women should bear all responsibilities while men relaxed and criticized.

The Breakup

That afternoon, I told Tom we needed to break up. He was shocked and demanded to know why. I simply told him that we weren’t compatible and that even if we married, we wouldn’t be happy.

For the past few days, Tom’s mother has been texting me, pleading for me to reconsider. She says Tom needs me, and she hopes I’ll come back to him. I feel both sorry for her and terrified of the life she endures.

It’s not an easy decision, but I know I’ve made the right one for myself.
