Twilley, a two-time All-American at Tulsa, won back-to-back Super Bowls with the Miami Dolphins in the pros.

The Houston, Texas native was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1965 and was the UPI Lineman of the Year after a record-setting final season in which he recorded 134 receptions for 1,779 receiving yards. The records stood for 24 and 30 years, respectively.

Tulsa tweeted on Thursday that their former player was one of the greatest receivers in college football history.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Tulsa Football Legend and Hall of Famer, Howard Twilley,” they wrote. “Twilley was one of the greatest receivers in College Football history, setting numerous NCAA records before venturing to the NFL and winning two Super Bowls. Our hearts and sympathies are with Twilley’s family and his many friends.”

Howard Twilley Opened Miami’s Super Bowl Account

Howard Twilley was drafted by both the NFL and AFL in 1966 and was selected by the Dolphins. He spent his entire 11-year career with them, first in the AFL and then the NFL.

He made 120 regular-season appearances, registering 212 catches for 3,064 yards and 23 touchdowns. He added 13 catches and 186 yards in 11 playoff appearances.

Twilley scored the first-ever Super Bowl touchdown in Miami franchise history in Super Bowl VII, helping the team beat the Washington Redskins in an undefeated season that saw them go 17-0.

He was on the team that beat the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl VIII the following year.

TPS extends condolences to Howard Twilley’s family, friends, and loved ones.

May he rest in peace.
