Britney Spears revealed she was one of the original Swifties in a jaw-dropping Instagram post she uploaded this Saturday.
The Instagram update included a backstage throwback of Britney with Taylor Swift that dates all the way back to 2003.
At that point, Britney was a globally recognized superstar, but Taylor was a jobbing 14-year-old singer completely unknown to the world.
It was not until three years later that Taylor burst onto the scene with her single Tim McGraw, launching the career that has reportedly now made her a billionaire.
In her new Instagram caption, Britney revealed that 20 years ago, Taylor approached her through an intermediary and managed to sing for her – leaving the older songstress astonished by the young gun’s talent.
‘This is way back when but kinda cool … During my Oops Tour, I got a knock at my door,’ Britney wrote, setting the scene.
‘My good friend at the time was the assistant to my manager who was trying to become a manager himself,’ she explained.
‘There was a knock, and then he said: “I have a girl named Taylor who wants to come in and sing for you.” I was like of course !!!’
She continued: ‘He walks in, and she sings a beautiful song with her guitar I was like wow wow she’s unbelievable !!!’
Britney deadpanned: ‘We took a picture, and she then became the most iconic pop woman of our generation. Kinda cool she plays stadiums, and I prefer her videos over movies any day. She’s stunning !!! Girl crush.’
Her anecdote was accompanied by the original backstage picture from 2003, plus a famous snap of her and Taylor at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.
By that point, Taylor had already rocketed to fame and released her first two studio albums, encompassing such classic songs as You Belong With Me.
Taylor is currently in Buenos Aires while thundering around the world with her barnstorming Eras Tour, which has proven to be an economic juggernaut that helped finally nudge her over the line to billionaire status.
Meanwhile Britney has just released a bestselling memoir called The Woman In Me, launching barbs at such targets as her ex Justin Timberlake, her parents and her sister Jamie Lynn, whom she accused of having been a ‘total b****’ at the age of 11.
Within the pages of The Woman In Me, Britney accused her parents Jamie and Lynne of having thrown out her childhood dolls and journals.
She described her Madame Alexander dolls as having been particularly important to her, as one of the few luxuries in her financially strapped childhood.
Britney said her parents got rid of her ‘prized possessions,’ like the dolls and diaries , back in 2019 when she had just been treated for her mental health and was still in the grip of Jamie’s controversial conservatorship.
After being freed from the conservatorship in 2021, Britney furiously accused her mother of having been the ‘mastermind’ of the arrangement.
Although their relations appear to have cooled since then, Britney still took aim at Lynne in the memoir, saying Lynne was party to disposing of the dolls.
‘I’m not sure who told you I got rid of your dolls and journals but I would never do that!’ Lynne retorted on her Instagram page Thursday.
‘That would be cruel because I know how much they mean to you. They are special to me too because of the years we spent collecting them. Of course I still have your things, and I am happy to send them to you if you’d like me to. Please let me know and know how much I love you!’
On Saturday, in a postscript to the caption of her Taylor Swift post, Britney issued an eye-catching reply to her mother’s entreaty.
‘Ps mom I love you so so much, but there were 3 dolls in the cabinets when I went home 2 years ago … kinda really weird you would take them out and then put them back in … so messed up,’ wrote Britney. ‘Nope, I don’t want them. Keep it all. I honestly don’t care anymore … honestly though.’
