Jason Statham Did Not Want To Star In Fast & Furious
Jason Statham was not keen to star in Fast & Furious
Jason Statham is now one of the best ‘parts’ of the Fast & Furious franchise. His role as Deckard Shaw was well received by the audience thanks to his physicality, charm, and unique sense of humor that led to many memorable scenes. Furthermore, the character development he undergoes from a vengeful antagonist to a complex anti-hero is remarkable, and Statham’s performance in bringing the character to life is impressive.
Despite having such an enduring and compelling character, the Transporter star had reservations about taking up the role.
“I didn’t really want to play the villain, but there are certain moments where you think it might be a good time to do that. I’m not saying I’m the full-blooded… I’m not going to tell you too much about what I’m going to do in the film, but if it’s a good villain, there’s obviously some consideration to be made. There are some really bad villains out there, and I don’t want to get myself wet with that sh*t.”
While he remained on pines and needles, Jason Statham eventually took on the role and did an incredibly wonderful job becoming a fan-favorite in no time.
Jason Statham Did Not Want To Play A James Bond-esque Villain
Statham wanted Deckard Shaw to me a way cooler villain
The very first thing Statham did before taking on the role was to make sure that he would not be playing a manipulating, sinister, eccentric James Bond-esque villain. When he found out that Deckard Shaw is supposed to be a very personal affair, he sat down to develop the character to make it a cooler and charismatic yet chivalrous villain.
“It was sort of a work in progress. Do I want to be the scumbag villain who’s out to blow up the world and steal everybody’s cash? No. The Bond Villain wasn’t on the menu. I wanted it to be vengeful. It was much cooler, much more precise. And it’s a great parallel. He’s all about family? I’m all about family.”
And hence the beloved now-anti-hero Deckard Shaw was born.
