Kate Winslet took no time to turn into a household name after her performance as Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic. The romantic disaster movie catapulted both Leonardo DiCaprio’s and Winslet’s fame to significant heights. But unfortunately, it also came with a cost that affected the British actress to a large extent.
The British actress’ nude scene in the James Cameron directorial can be considered one of the most iconic scenes in the history of filmmaking. But Kate Winslet didn’t like the media attention she was exposed to after the famous drawing scene and almost regretted taking the role. The excessive unwanted attention had a very negative effect on her back then.

There is hardly anyone who doesn’t remember the iconic “Draw me like one of your French girls” scene in the 1997 movie. Speaking on that, Kate Winslet admitted that she felt disturbed by the extreme media attention she was subjected to after that movie. The media was so harsh that it even came down to body shaming.
“What I really remember vividly is that when I did Titanic and was so thrust into the public eye, I was shocked and horrified by how vilified I was by mainstream media.”
The Oscar-winning actress added that she doesn’t think the media works like that anymore in this era. She believes that the modern mainstream media is a lot more evolved than what happened before.
“I think that doesn’t happen now. Sure, that stuff happens on social media, amongst people and the public sharing opinions – some people just have nasty sh*t to say. But mainstream media behaving in these really irresponsible damaging ways – I do think that has actually stopped.”
Not only Kate Winslet, but her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio also stated how he was unhappy with the “pretty boy” image after Titanic. Interestingly, Winslet also has numerous other issues with her performance in the $2 billion blockbuster.
Kate Winslet wants to re-do her entire Titanic performance
Despite being a landmark movie among critics as well as audiences, Kate Winslet wouldn’t want to miss any chance of not re-doing Titanic once again. The Avatar: The Way of Water actress feels that her performance was awful in the film. Starting from her accent to her entire performance, nothing impresses the actress now as she looks back on it.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Kate Winslet stated:
“Every single scene, I’m like, ‘Really, really? You did it like that? Hopefully it’s so much better now. It sounds terribly self-indulgent, but actors do tend to be very self-critical. I have a hard time watching any of my performances, but watching Titanic I was just like, ‘Oh god, I want to do that again.’”
Although it can be understood that people always tend to improve, the audiences are not as critical of her performance as the actress herself. The audience also didn’t have any complaints about her accent as many fans didn’t even feel any non-American persona delivering those dialogues. Despite all the negativity around, nobody can disagree that Titanic has a cult following and will forever maintain its popularity as an iconic movie.
Titanic can be streamed on Prime Video.
