Unlike most of her hits from the last decade, Jennifer Lawrence’s Mother! failed to make it big upon its release. Although the film did score decent among critics and a substantial portion of her fandom flowered the psychological horror with love, it only made $44.5 million at the box office.

One of the major reasons behind the Darren Aronofsky-led film’s box-office failure was its convoluting plot, which many had a hard time dealing with. Surprisingly, not only fans but The Hunger Games Star too had a hard time grasping the premise despite being in a relationship with Aronofsky at the time.

This isn’t new for actors to not understand the film that they are working on, with one prominent example being Sean Connery, who didn’t understand his The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Similarly, in Jennifer Lawrence‘s case, even though she was pretty close with Aronofsky at the time and had cliff notes about Mother!, Lawrence still had a hard time dealing with the plot.

During her appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Lawrence explained,

“I’m going to be honest, Well, I was sleeping with the director, so I had CliffsNotes. So … 5? Or a 4. But if anybody needs any tips on understanding their films, you know what to do!”

Many fans did claim that Lawrence’s character in the film was intended to represent Mother Nature and the invasion of her house by strangers was representing the environment getting destroyed by humans. But nothing can’t be said for sure about Aronofsky’s work and the true meaning behind his film still remains up for debate.

Jennifer Lawrence Had a Hard Time Dealing With the Film’s Failure

Although Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t exactly sure about the true meaning behind the film’s convoluting plot, witnessing the negative reviews had a heavy impact on the actress. Considering that Lawrence pushed herself over the limits to deliver justice to her then boyfriend’s vision, which took a heavy toll on the actress, the film’s underwhelming reception left her heartbroken.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she said,
“I read Twitter, and I was looking for bad mother! things. It was horrible. It was really bad. I loved this so much, and it just broke my heart, especially for Darren because he loved this [character]. And any time you’re in a relationship, their pain is your pain.”

As of now, Jennifer Lawrence has no intentions of dealing with such intense projects and is having a great time tackling more light-hearted works, with her recent release being No Hard Feelings.
