“Sydney Sweeney writes her place in horror history”: Euphoria Star’s Gamble Pays Off as ‘Immaculate’ Fails to Disappoint Fans and Critics Alike

Critics are all praise for Sydney Sweeney’s best performance so far in the psychological horror Immaculate.

The acting credits of Sydney Sweeney are getting bigger and better. We are less than three months into 2024 and she has already starred in two movies. After the disappointing “Madame Web”, Sweeney has now come back with “Immaculate”.

The pre-release buzz surrounding the movie wasn’t overwhelmingly positive, leaving many with a sense of trepidation. However, in a surprising turn of events, “Immaculate” has defied expectations. The film has not only managed to appease fans but has also garnered the respect of critics, who are particularly praising Sweeney for her role.

Sydney Sweeney Collects Praise For Her Role In Immaculate

Immaculate is a psychological horror movie. It follows the story of Cecilia, played by Sydney Sweeney, a nun who takes a job in the Italian countryside. Her initially smooth life takes a harsh turn when she slowly starts uncovering the hidden secrets of her new residence.

While the plot of Immaculate sounds strong, fans did not quite have the hope of watching the Euphoria star excel in a horror movie role. However, Sweeney surpassed these expectations and turned out to be the main reason behind the movie’s initial critical success.

The movie is being praised for its production, with one critic claiming that there “isn’t an ounce of fat on its 89 min runtime”. However, much of the praise is directed to Sweeney’s acting in the movie, with some calling her “a natural born final girl”.

Given the great review of Immaculate, it is safe to debate that Sweeney has given perhaps her best performance to date.

Before she was praised for Immaculate, Sydney Sweeney was also at the receiving end of criticism for Madame Web. Almost everyone had expected the movie to be a disaster and well, it did turn out to be one.

The movie failed to even cross the $100 Million gross on the worldwide box office. Sweeney played the role of Julia Cornwall, a future Spider-Woman. While the movie was a commercial as well as a critical failure, its cast was rather unfazed, which includes Sweeney as well. Speaking to Los Angeles Times,  she said how she was only hired as an actor for the movie.
“I was just hired as an actress in it, so I was just along for the ride for whatever was going to happen.”

Practically, it is good that the actors do not take a movie’s failure to themselves. Further, it took Sweeney less than a month to bounce back from the failure of Madame Web. With her role in Immaculate, Sweeney has managed to turn her hatred into praise.

Immaculate made its premiere on March 12, 2024, at the South by Southwest Film Festival and will be released in theatres on March 22, 2024.
