“That wasn’t planned”: Blake Lively’s Gruesome Injury Made it to the Final Cut of Her $119M Horror Movie After Movie Didn’t Use a Stunt Double for Scary Scene

From the flamboyant persona that Blake Lively displays in her life outside Hollywood, fans often forget that she is a brilliant actress. The Gossip Girl star has delivered some outstanding performances despite not always getting the roles she truly deserves. One such memorable performance came from the 2016 movie The Shallows, which featured, well, only Blake Lively and a CGI shark.

A Simple Favor actress became a household name after marrying her Green Lantern co-star, Ryan Reynolds. The funny banter between the two actors on social media has endeared them to fans, making them one of Hollywood’s favorite couples.

In The Shallows, Blake Lively‘s character, Nancy Adams, is attacked by a shark while surfing, and her struggle for survival becomes the essence of the movie. During the shooting of some challenging scenes in the movie, Lively encountered a gruesome accident. In the climax of the movie, The Age of Adaline actress had to shoot on a buoy in the sea, a structure that was not particularly stable, making it difficult for her to perform her scenes.

During one such difficult shot, while climbing the buoy, the actress slipped and fell, smacking her face onto the metal structure. Despite being in severe pain, she bravely completed the shot. Interestingly, apart from a pro-surfer body double, Blake Lively did not have a stunt double, as she was determined to perform her stunts herself.

The filmmakers acknowledged Blake Lively’s courageous efforts and decided to include the injury in the final cut of the movie. Following the accident, new stunt doubles were hired for the remaining two weeks of filming. The Savages actress recounted the incident in an interview with Fox:
“There’s another scene where the buoy falls down and I pull myself up and I crack my face and I’ve got this bloody nose. That was real. That wasn’t planned. Real bloody nose, real crack. That was really awful and scary. When I came up I thought either I’m going to pass out right now or I’m going to continue the scene and be so awesome and bad**s and proud.”
As for what’s on the professional front for the daring actress, Lively will be seen in two potential movie adaptations. The Hick actress will don the role of Lily Bloom in the movie adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s famous book It Ends With Us. The 35-year-old actress will also appear as Josie Schuller in Netflix’s Lady Killer, based on the 2015-16 comic book series of the same name.
