As fans bring back a controversial moment from MCU, Marvel reportedly trying to correct its past mistakes.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is among the biggest universe of all time with a plethora of characters and storylines. Yet lately, the franchise has been drawing a lot of flak and criticism over a number of things ranging from introducing unnecessary characters to its lack of recurring formidable foes.
One of the resurfaced issues with the universe’s Phase 4 and 5 has been the debate surrounding Kang’s character. After one X user brought the issue back to the limelight, one can’t help but wonder if Marvel might be attempting to right its wrong seeing the recent interview of Marvel Studio’s head of streaming, television, and animation, Brad Winderbaum.
Marvel Fans Bring Back One Horrifying Phase 4 & 5 Arc
Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror in the MCU
From the lack of emotionally developed characters to the lack of practicality in the narrative, fans over the years have found multiple issues with Marvel‘s Phases 4 and 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (see Reddit and Medium). However, a recurring debate has been about the character of Kang the Conqueror.
Although a pretty well-developed character, spanning over different series and movies, he seemed to lack credibility and the formidableness seen in its comic book iteration. One instance of this is the critically blasted Marvel movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
During one scene, the multiversal menace states how he defeated Thor and the other Avengers. Yet the character ends up losing at the hand of a hero like Ant-Man (no hate for the regular-sized man). Even X user and industry scooper, Daniel Richtman recently tweeted,
“I’m reminded of how Kang boasted about killing Thor in Quantumania, but let’s be real, there’s no way that loser who lost to Ant-Man actually took down Thor (and other Avengers). He can say whatever he wants, but they didn’t make it seem believable at all.”
While his tweet kicked off another round of criticism for the superhero-verse and debate among the fans, there is no denying that Kang’s portrayal (in this particular instance) fails to honor the established power dynamics within the MCU.
Marvel Apparently Trying To Right its Many Wrongs
Brad Winderbaum on Phase Zero
The Marvel Cinematic Universe had a splendid year last year, only if splendid meant a series of failed shots and critical damnation. After fans brought back the infamous Kang debate, it seems Marvel is trying to right the many wrongs it has committed in its last few phases.
In a new interview with Phase Zero, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studio’s head of streaming, television, and animation, discussed the upcoming MCU plans. After revealing that they have plans to bring Nova to the MCU, Winderbaum stated,
“We are not sitting idle. So it’s like it stays in the oven. Certain things can be baked a little longer. In fact, I think it will only make things better in the end.”
While it remains to be seen how Marvel will handle Kang’s character in the upcoming movies or if will it be entirely dropped in the light of Jonathan Majors‘ firing, it seems the studio is taking its time to do things right this time.
Whether or not they succeed in righting their wrongs is hard to determine, but one thing is for sure is that Marvel needs to revamp itself given the success of its projects last year.
Meanwhile, the entire MCU can be streamed on Disney+.
