Nude scenes in movies have always been a topic of debate. Many directors have asked their actors to appear nude before the camera stating the obvious ‘demand of the script.’ The new waves of movie-making further promoted nude scenes in movies in an attempt to shed a realistic approach to the films. One such scene featured Hollywood sweetheart, Kate Winslet.

The beginning of nude scenes in movies in Hollywood dates back to the 1960s when a few actors decided to go against the wind of taboos and the Production Code (1934-1968) that forbade nudity, abortion, and queer relationships in movies. Marilyn Monroe filmed two nude scenes for the first time and the trend continued. Years later, James Cameron’s Titanic n*de scenes of Kate Winslet in the film gained an iconic status, but the actress was not all too happy with that.

Kate Winslet rose and became a global star with immense popularity after appearing in James Cameron’s classic 1997 romance drama, Titanic. Winslet played Rose DeWitt Bukater, the romantic lead alongside Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack Dawson. The movie had some steamy and intense scenes which are considered iconic even today. However, the actor was not too happy about doing them.

At a show of the Titanic 3D release in 2012, Winslet talked to The Sun about the n*de scenes in the movie- one in the car with Leonardo DiCaprio, and of course the most popular one, the scene where he sketches her wearing just The Heart of the Ocean.
“I’m not going to look. I’ll be in the bar by that point,” Winslet told The Sun. “I wish I hadn’t shown so much flesh but I was young and I knew I had things to prove.”
Later, in an interview for Yahoo! in 2014, the actor revealed that a fan handed her a photo of her naked in the cult blockbuster for a dedication. She was clearly embarrassed. “I never sign an autograph in this photo…”, said the actor. “This makes me very uncomfortable. Why do people do this? I am regularly asked to sign this photo,” she added.
“I didn’t want it to become a photograph that I would continue to see [seventeen years] later.”

“And, despite everything, it’s quite strange because this particular scene still haunts me today” she concluded.
Despite the success of the movie or her career boost, Titanic has imprinted a memory she’d regret for the rest of her life. Many fans are quite fond of the scenes and ask the actor to sign autographs which further adds humiliation to the actor.

In a surprising turn of events, Winslet said that she flashed Leonardo DiCaprio during that first day of shooting to break the ice. The actor said DiCaprio was surprised by her act. The official behind-the-scenes book of the movie stated that the nude drawing was the first scene to shoot. “I was naked in front of Leo on the first day of shooting,” Winslet stated in the book.
“She had no shame with it. She wanted to break the ice a little beforehand, so she flashed me. I wasn’t prepared for that, so she had a one-up on me. I was pretty comfortable after that,” DiCaprio added.
The actors were also found pranking each other like mischievous school pals. “We were kind of the two goofy kids on the set,” said Winslet.
“Y’know, working with Leonardo DiCaprio – he’s a bit gorgeous, and I was worried that I was going to be bowled over by him, or that he was going to find me all stuffy and Shakespearean and English.”

“But the second we met, we just completely clicked.”
Talking about their friendship DiCaprio said that they were partners.
“She was my best friend for seven months. We’d unload the stresses of the shoot to each other, vent to each other, watch out for each other… Kate was just the perfect person to work with because she was very much one of the guys, and it would have been much harder without her. We were partners,” he said.
The movie enhanced the friendship between the actors which still remains today. Of course, the duo is nothing like Jack and Rose in real life, rather share a very platonic, but close, friendship.
