The actor’s body might be accustomed to brutal training, but there is one thing that gives Momoa a boost whenever he needs it.

Jason Momoa is a big man, having played a slew of barbaric characters to prove his point even more. Be it the ruthless Khal Drogo from HBO’s epic fantasy series Game of Thrones, Baba Voss from Apple’s Sci-Fi offering See, or DCEU’s Aquaman. However, there seems to be something about the actor that can make him appear bigger when he wants to, essentially on command.

The actor, speaking to Men’s Health, opened up about his unique mutation, something he credits to his training and his aversion to sugars too. Detailing how exactly this phenomenon occurs in his body, Momoa talked about how just a pint of Guinness swells him up enough that there is a marked difference in his body’s appearance.

Jason Momoa says it’s all about “consistency”

Jason Momoa revealed that he is not someone who likes to have sweet things. Absolutely abhorring sugars in general, Momoa has gone on record multiple times to discuss his aversion to sweet things, categorically denying ever having a sweet tooth. However, sugars do react weirdly with his body, so it makes sense that the man would stay away from them. Talking to Men’s Health, he said:
“I’m not a fan of chocolates or things like that. I don’t have a sweet tooth. So when we had to peak, they would give me peanut butter and yams. Because you have no carbs and because the veins are restricted, all of a sudden you should just look really swole, and filled up, and your veins pop.”
The sugars in the Guinness are what gives Momoa his edge, making him appear a little more swole as compared to not having it.

And it’s not even something he has to do discreetly. When he had the Guinness on the set of Aquaman, not only did he have the drink with his two trainers present, but they were shocked at how the drink reacted to his body. He said:
“I was like, ‘Just give me a Guinness.’ And I had been deprived for so long that I just cracked one of these, and both of my trainers were right in front of me, and they watched and I just had one. And you can see my veins… you can see everything just coming back to life. And they’re like, ‘You’re a freak. That makes no sense. You’re a freak.’ I’m like, ‘My body – it’s what it loves. It’s what it likes.”

Momoa credits this ‘mutation’ to one other thing, given how different his body is compared to that of the average human being.

Jason Momoa credits his heritage to this power

There is one other thing that Jason Momoa credits for his unusual biology. Apart from his severe aversion to sugars, the actor also credits his heritage for the way his body reacts to carbs. He said:
“I’m just Hawaiian. I’m half Polynesian. There’s not a lot of Polynesians rolling around where you see veins popping out. It’s a different body type. We’re big. The abs are different for us, but we’re big strong humans. My skin’s different. And I don’t eat sugars.”
Momoa’s physique is something that requires a lot of training and exercise to get to, but there are just some things that you cannot train for.
Momoa has taken up characters that require a lot of physicality to get through, such as Duncan Idaho in Dune Part One, Conan in Conan the Barbarian, and of course, Aquaman in the DCEU. It makes complete sense why the actor has taken up these roles, given how suited he was to them with his unique physicality.
