Shelton has not released his own original song in two years, and when he signed on to a new record label, The Voice coach decided it was time to do something different and release music again.

He credits Post Malone for this comeback. In an interview with PEOPLE, he said:

Then that kid came along and asked me to sing on his song with him. It took off and was a big hit this summer, and it reminded me like, ‘Hey, get off your a–! This may be your last chance to really take a big swing at this thing.’ So here I am.

Post Malone’s energy and their collaborative No.1 hit set the tone for Shelton’s return to the scene. He did so with his new song, “Texas,” which is a nod to George Strait.

His new song follows a man who lost his love and is unsure where she has gone.

In a press release for the new song, they say: “The fresh and addictive song captures the classic theme of lost love with a twist and nod to George Strait, who knows best where all the exes go!”

You can clearly see that in some of the lyrics, where he even names the classic singer.

“She’s probably in Texas.

Amarillo, all I know.

George Strait said it,

Yeah, that’s where all them exes go.

If she ain’t with me out here in Tennessee,

Then I don’t know where she’s headed.

If I’m guessin’, I reckon,

She’s probably in Texas.

She’s probably in Texas.”

The shout-out is about George Strait’s iconic hit, “All My Exes Live in Texas.”

So what better song to ring in the New Year than Shelton’s comeback and a nod to one of country music’s greats?
