Simon Cowell was completely lost for words after an opera singer on Britain’s Got Talent threw spaghetti bolognese all over his face mid-audition. Simon and the other judges had been invited up on the stage to sit at a dining table, laid up with cutlery, napkins and a spaghetti dinner whilst singer Natalie Choquette, from Montreal in Canada belted out a song.

Asked why she wanted to audition for BGT, Natalie, 65, said: “[I’m auditioning] because there is a missing piece in the puzzle of my life. You see, I am an opera singer and I have performed in many countries but I have never sung in the UK and my great-grandparents are from London and Birmingham, so to me, it’s gonna be the first time I ever sing in the UK – so it really means a lot to me to be here. I’m so moved.”

“Do you think this is something the Royal Family will love?” asked Simon. “Of course, I have come here to win,” Natalie responded.

Natalie’s performance started a little unconventionally. “May I invite you up to have a meal with me on stage?” she asked the judges. As she began her performance, Natalie sang beautifully and welcomed the judges to the stage – then it all became a bit strange. 

Holding Natalie’s hand, Simon said: “It’s nice to meet you,” before he took his seat at the dinner table and Natalie draped a napkin around his neck.

Natalie continued to sing, occasionally leaning into a judge and singing to them directly. At one point, she took a glass of wine and gargled it, before continuing to sing her song. Simon and the other judges seemed very confused by Natalie’s performance, and at one point Simon turned to the others and said: “she’s so odd.”

Natalie looked glamorous and the audience were expecting a traditional opera singing performance – but it soon became clear that Natalie had a few surprises in store

Simon said it was ‘nice to meet’ Natalie – moments later she flung spaghetti on his face –

Natalie later started to devour the spaghetti bolognese on a bowl in front of her – whilst still singing – and scooped up a pile of spaghetti and thrusted it up in the air on her fork. She then stood up and grabbed some spaghetti from the bowl in front of Simon and flung it into his face. Unsurprisingly, Simon looked completely baffled and didn’t know how to respond.

Natalie was then joined on stage by two people dressed as waiters, who dumped spaghetti on Bruno’s head – and a strange substance, thought to be cheese, fell from the ceiling onto the judges, like confetti.

Simon tried to catch Alesha and Amanda, who had evaded the dreaded spaghetti on their faces, before returning to the safety of his judge seat and pressing all four red buzzers, ending Natalie’s performance and automatically knocking her out of the programme.

“What was that?” he called out to the audience, astonished. “Why did you do that?” he asked Natalie.

“I always tease people I really love,” Natalie replied. “And that’s how you show love? Ok!” Simon responded. “I’m sending you the dry cleaning bill,” added Amanda.
