Taurasi’s season came to an end when the Mercury were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Lynx. However, during their final home game, fans and teammates honored her remarkable career.
The 2024 WNBA season came to an exciting conclusion as the New York Liberty claimed the championship trophy after a dramatic, albeit controversial, Game 5 of the Finals. This season was notable for breaking records in attendance, viewership, and overall engagement. This was the first title for New York Liberty, Amid this backdrop, WNBA legend Diana Taurasi has provided an update on her future in the league.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Taurasi reflected on her potential retirement, saying, “I don’t take retirement lightly. I know the minute I say it or announce it, whether it’s, you know, in a month or two months, I’m going to mean it.” She emphasized that she plans to discuss her decision with her wife, Penny Taylor, and the Phoenix Mercury, noting she is “still in the thought process.”
“I have not taken it lightly. I think about it every day. You know, I’m still in deep thought about it. I want to make the right decision, you know, and I’m just taking my time a little bit. And you know, sometimes when the season ends, the last thing you want to think about is the next season,” ” the 42-year-old Taurasi explained.
Her oldest player feat
Taurasi’s season came to an end when the Mercury were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Lynx. However, during their final home game, fans and teammates honored her remarkable career, as she became the oldest player in both WNBA and NBA history to score over 20 points in a playoff game. This achievement is just one highlight in a prolific career that began when she was drafted first overall by the Mercury in 2004, earning the WNBA Rookie of the Year award. Throughout her time in the league, Taurasi has led the Mercury to three championships (2007, 2009, 2014) and has become the league’s all-time leading scorer.
Taurasi has previously stated that she is not interested in having a ‘farewell tour.’ “When I go, I’ll just go,” she said during the playoffs, indicating that when she chooses to announce her retirement, it will be definitive. However, she is open to staying involved in basketball in some form.
She draws inspiration from Mercury and Suns owner Mat Ishbia. Expressing curiosity about a future role, Taurasi mentioned her interest in becoming a team owner. “I definitely love the idea of being able to have a position where obviously you influence a team. The things to which he’s done with the team, it’s really the next step, I think, for female athletes,” she added.
