Fans are calling for a new musician collaboration after watching Keith Urban pull off an impromptu cover of one of this year’s most successful pop songs.
Urban, 56, delivered the unexpected performance during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, Sept. 24. At one point during the show, the “Somebody Like You” singer pulled out a banjo guitar—also called a ganjo—and began strumming and singing Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso.”
Urban’s twangy spin on the 25-year-old singer’s pop hit and his modified lyrics—“I’m working late ’cause I’m a banjo player / I can’t relate to people who love Slayer”—had fans raving over the performance when the late night show posted a video clip of it on social media.
“The man can do literally anything 💃🏼🎶❤️… such a talent!!” one TikTok user commented, as another called Urban “such an underrated musician.”
“I have to say does Keith Urban ever do anything that does not sound good the answer is no. 😁♥️🎶♥️🎤😂,” one Instagram user declared.
“It’s amazing how talented Keith is! He’s an absolute musical genius!! ♥️🎼♥️,” another Instagram user gushed.
“This man…. There is nothing he can’t do,” an Instagram user agreed.
The four-time Grammy Award winner’s revised lyric referencing the thrash metal group Slayer “is peak,” one TikTok user wrote, as another put their own spin on Carpenter’s lyrics, writing, “that’s that Keith espresso ☕️.”
Several people said the performance provided proof that fans now need to hear the two collaborate.
“Keith Urban and Sabrina Carpenter should have a duet 😍🔥❤️,” one Instagram user wrote.
“Ok now we need an official Espresso banjo remix with Keith Urban. Now please,” a TikTok user said, as another agreed, writing they “need them to do a song together now😩.”
