My husband and I have been married for two years, but he has always kept his finances a secret from me. He insists that we keep our money separate. I had to fight with him and even threatened divorce before he agreed to give me 10 million VND a month. But even then, he only gave me money and never shared anything about his finances. For example, he never tells me how much he earns, what he does, or where he invests. I have no idea.

Back in June, my father had a traffic accident, and the hospital told us to prepare about 200 million VND for his surgery. I didn’t have enough money, so I asked my husband, but he said he didn’t have any. He even told me: “Your father is your responsibility, so you should borrow money for his treatment. Why ask me?”

His cold response made me want to cry. I couldn’t say anything, I just cried uncontrollably. After a night of crying, I realized I had to be strong and take care of my father, as I couldn’t rely on this ungrateful husband.

I had to borrow money from my colleagues to pay for my father’s surgery. Fortunately, I had worked with them for many years, and we had a close relationship. They trusted me and lent me a total of 100 million VND. For the remaining 100 million, I had to borrow at high-interest rates, figuring out how to repay it later. Even now, I still don’t know how much my husband earns each month. My in-laws also can’t ask their son for help. My husband told me that his parents live with his older brother, so it’s his brother’s responsibility to take care of them. If they become ill and can’t work, then he will help or send them money. But as long as they’re healthy, he insists on keeping the money for his own investments. I just don’t understand why my husband cares more about money than family.

Yesterday, I was cleaning the fridge when I found a small black bag that had been in the freezer for two years. I took it out, curious to see if it was some old meat or fish, something I should throw away. This black bag belonged to my husband. He occasionally reminded me not to touch the meat inside, saying it was special. I didn’t think much of it, as it was just a small amount of meat, and I didn’t want to argue with him, so I never opened it all this time.

But now, curiosity got the better of me. What could be so important to him? When I opened it, I was stunned to find that it was full of gold rings. I counted them—seven taels of gold in total.

My husband was so selfish, caring more about money than the bonds of family.

The next morning, I sent him a long message, expressing everything that had been on my mind. What I truly wanted was an explanation from him. I really wanted to understand why he valued money so much that he was willing to neglect his family. Here’s what I sent him:

“Anh T, over these years as your wife, I’ve tried my best. I’ve worked hard to raise our child, to take care of both our families, and to care for you. Do you know why? Because to me, my family—my husband, our child, and our parents—are the most important things in life. I don’t mind the hardships or sacrifices as long as my family is safe and happy. But what about you? What’s most important to you in life? I ask this sincerely, because I truly feel that you don’t value family. When my father had the accident, you didn’t help, even though you had the money. And even with your own parents, you won’t give them a single penny to take care of them. So what is your money for? Is it all just for yourself? If that’s the case, maybe I’ve married the wrong person.”

I sent the message in the morning, but didn’t get a response until the afternoon. His reply was short and cold:

“You can understand it however you want.”

I really don’t know what’s happening anymore. Why has my husband been hiding money for the past two years? What was the point of marrying him if this is how he treats me?
