Remember When Keith Urban Released “Somebody Like You”?

“Somebody Like You” was penned by Urban with guitarist John M. Shanks and released as the lead single from his third studio album Golden Road in 2001. The tune with the signature banjo riff ended up being sparking a significant turning point in Urban’s career.

It became Urban’s second song to peak at No. 1 on the country charts following his single, “But for the Grace of God. Additionally, the song spent 41 weeks on the country charts and landed at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Urban Opens Up About Writing The Song

Not only is this tune a staple in Urban’s live shows to this day, but it also comes with a unique background story that he often shares during interviews or on stage.

“That song started from flying out to LA meeting this guy John Shanks, who I didn’t know. I was so nervous to meet with some LA guy, and I’m like, what do I know? I’ve showed up with my banjo and everything,” he told Bobby Bones during a previous episode of BobbyCast.

Before making his way into the studio session, Urban admits he made a stop at an Irish pub and had a few drinks, which seemed to get the creativity flowing.

“It’s 10 in the morning and it was really good. So I had another one and it was really good, so I had a third one. I get in my car, drive over to the studio where he is, and by then I walked in and I felt pretty…not bulletproof, but I felt very relaxed, very confident.”

It didn’t take long for the country star to find the beat in a drum machine he found in the studio. From there, he pulled out his banjo, and eventually found the words to go along with the melody and suddenly it turned into the song fans love today.
