Despite his best efforts, Patrick Mahomes couldn’t steer the Kansas City Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl LIX, facing a punishing 40-22 defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles.

And the star quarterback shouldered responsibility for the loss post-match, acknowledging the Eagles’ superiority.

“I mean, credit to the Eagles, man. They played better than us from start to finish,” Mahomes said. “We didn’t start how we wanted to. Obviously, the turnovers hurt and I take all the blame for that.

“I mean those early turnovers swing the momentum of the game and they capitalised on them. They scored on the one and then they got a touchdown immediately after, so 14 points that I kind of gave them and it’s hard to come back from that in the Super Bowl.”

It was a difficult day for Mahomes who ended up throwing two interceptions including a pick-six which saw the Chiefs chasing a substantial deficit from early in the game.

“Just didn’t play to my standard and I have to be better next time,” he concluded, with this loss adjusting his Super Bowl record to 3-2.

FOX sports announcer and Super Bowl icon Tom Brady, who recently signed a staggering 10-year, $375 million deal with the network, was in the broadcast booth for Sunday’s game, offering words of comfort to Mahomes.

“I remember when I lost to the Giants in 2007, I got on the bus after the game, it was just devastating, I couldn’t speak for the rest of the night,” Brady shared.

“I just always remember waking up, that was a nightmare, that game didn’t happen? It’s a difficult feeling to have, but if there’s anybody who can rebound it’s Patrick Mahomes.”

Despite the defeat, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid remained proud of Mahomes and the team’s overall effort. “Today was a rough day all around. Nothing went right. I didn’t coach well. Proud of our guys for fighting,” he admitted.
