NBA Hall of Famer Sheryl Swoopes recently found herself on the wrong side of history after doubting rookie sensation Caitlin Clark.
Swoopes, who had previously reached out to Clark to apologize for an earlier misunderstanding, inadvertently sparked another controversy by questioning the young star’s potential.
It all started on April 8 when Connecticut Sun guard Alyssa Thomas predicted that Clark could lead the WNBA in assists.
When Clark’s teammate DiJonai Carrington tweeted, “Caitlin Clark might lead the league this year,” Thomas responded with, “Don’t play with me, nai.”
Swoopes, however, was not convinced and replied with a laughing emoji, expressing her doubt.
But Clark proved her wrong in spectacular fashion. On September 13, the Iowa native not only led her team with 9 assists during a 78-74 loss to the LA Sparks but also set a new WNBA record.
Clark finished the regular season with a stunning 321 assists, surpassing Alyssa Thomas to become the league’s assist leader.
The achievement silenced any skepticism, with Clark showing that her talent is as undeniable as it is remarkable.
Clark’s performance marked yet another historic milestone in her young career, proving once again that she thrives under pressure.
Her record-setting performance follows an earlier achievement when she notched 19 assists in a single game against the Dallas Wings back in July.
Caitlin Clark’s struggles with technical fouls
Despite her success, Clark’s intense passion for the game has led to issues with technical fouls.
During a pivotal game against the Las Vegas Aces, she earned her seventh technical foul, putting her on the brink of suspension.
The foul came after a personal foul call, which caused Clark to lash out by hitting the hoop in frustration.
Reflecting on the incident, Clark admitted, “I think I could have done a better job keeping my emotions in check, but at the same time, like, really?”
While Clark continues to dominate the court, her fiery nature could land her in trouble.
With one more technical foul potentially leading to a suspension, all eyes are on Clark as she balances her drive for excellence with maintaining control on the court.
