CeeDee Lamb is back in Dallas. The Cowboys receiver ended his holdout this week after finally reaching an agreement on a four-year, $136 million contract extension that makes him among the NFL‘s highest-paid wideout…but the negotiations were anything but straightforward.
Lamb had held out for most of the summer in a standoff with longtime Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who finally greenlit the extension this week — not long before Dallas opens its 65th NFL season with a matchup in Cleveland against the Browns.
Facing the media for the first time this summer, Lamb discussed the negotiations from his point of view — and what he felt was the “lowest moment” in the process.
Lamb had a tense conversation with his agent
When Lamb’s agent Tory Dandy told him recently that negotiations with the Cowboys were “going south“, the All-Pro receiver was beside himself.
Lamb told the media this week that he was “getting impatient” amid the lengthy wait; he wasn’t coming back to Dallas until his contract was sorted out.
Lamb said he asked Dandy what he meant by “going south”, adding that he felt it was time for negotiations to come to a close…only for his agent to reveal the breadth of Dallas’ final offer: $34 million per year.
“I’m like, ‘well, where do I sign?'” Lamb said to laughter from reporters.
Dandy’s trolling aside, Lamb emphasized that he was never really concerned that he would enter the 2024 season with free agency just around the corner.
Lamb is one of the best receivers in football and posted career highs in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns in 2023 — and while getting him to sign on the dotted line took a while, Dallas had to prioritize Lamb to continue its rich tradition of star power at receiver.
