The Indiana Fever pulled off the upset win over the Connecticut Sun, winning the contest 84-80. However, Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports might be the biggest winner from this game.
Portnoy is well-known for placing big bets. But he may have had a personal vendetta against Brandon Walker, another Barstool personality, as to why he placed a massive bet on the Fever to win.
During a segment on Barstool Gambling, Walker called out Portnoy by claiming the Barstool Sports’ founder and owner is a “phony” WNBA fan. Walker then went on to choose the Sun to beat the Fever in Wednesday night’s game.
With that in mind, Portnoy has been a Caitlin Clark believer since her days in college. Almost immediately after Walker called out Portnoy, the Barstool founder and owner posted his betting ticket. He placed a $50,000 bet for Clark and the Fever to upset the Sun. Portnoy walked away with $122,500.
In classic Portnoy fashion, he took to social media shortly after the game ended to call out Walker. The Barstool founder and owner didn’t hold back as he simply re-shared the video with his own caption and tagging Walker in the post.
“You can’t teach this type of dumb.”
The Fever have been one of the hottest teams in the league lately. They’ve won seven of their last 10 games as the team is meshing well in the later portion of the regular season. Additionally, Indiana is inching toward clinching a playoff spot for the first time since 2016.
Clark has shown steady improvement throughout her rookie year. She got off to a slow start struggling with turnovers. But she seems to be settling in nicely in the final stretch of the season. On Wednesday night, Clark finished with 19 points, five rebounds, and five assists to push the Fever over the Sun.
She’s also in the mix for Rookie of the Year with many clamoring for her to win it outright. Clark has built a strong resume, as she’s already broken the WNBA’s rookie record in three-pointers made in a single season. She’s also broken the record for most assists in a single season for a rookie as well.
On the season, Clark is averaging 18.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game. She’ll have another opportunity to improve her numbers on August 30 as Clark and the Fever take on Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky. That should be a fun matchup considering both teams are fighting for a spot in the WNBA Playoffs.
