Just hours after Lady Gaga took to TikTok to shut down pregnancy speculation, Taylor Swift has spoken up to urge everyone to mind their own business and not comment on others’ bodies. Couldn’t agree more.
Rumors about a Gaga pregnancy began circulating after the internet got hold of pictures of the pop star at her sister’s wedding in which she seemed to be covering her stomach. But Gaga brushed it off, posting a TikTok on which she wrote, “Not pregnant—just down bad cryin at the gym,” a reference to Taylor Swift’s song “Down Bad” from her latest album. Funnily enough, on another Tortured Poets Department track, Swift mocks the constant pregnancy rumors with the line, “I’m having his baby, no I’m not, but you should see your faces.”
Because Lady Gaga is who she is, she also used the attention to tell everyone to make sure they’re registered to vote.
Taylor Swift herself commented on the video, not to reassure Gaga, who seems happy and confident, but to urge everyone to quit picking apart everyone’s appearance. “Can we all agree that its invasive & irresponsible to comment on a woman’s body. Gaga doesn’t owe anyone an explanation & neither does any woman.”
Swift has previously revealed how body scrutiny, and in particular pregnancy rumors, have affected her mental health and triggered an eating disorder (something Gaga has dealt with too). In the documentary Miss Americana, Swift explains that she tries not to look at photos of herself every day, because in the past, there were times when she saw “a picture of me where I feel like I looked like my tummy was too big, or…someone said that I looked pregnant…and that’ll just trigger me to just starve a little bit—just stop eating.
“I remember how, when I was 18, that was the first time I was on the cover of a magazine,” she recalled. “And the headline was like ‘Pregnant at 18?’ And it was because I had worn something that made my lower stomach look not flat.”
Sarah Tanno, Gaga’s makeup artist and the creative director of her cosmetics line Haus Labs, also came to the star’s defense, calling out the fans who have speculated multiple times that she’s pregnant based solely on weight fluctuations (which are normal).
“Fans have been saying for years that’s she was pregnant, just because how she looks in certain outfits. Why spread a rumor about somebody that you care about or love? It does affect people’s mental health, people should not be body shaming people or assuming they are pregnant when they aren’t!” wrote Tanno on X.
