The sports world is in mourning following the tragic death of Greg Harden, Tom Brady’s life coach during his time at the University of Michigan. Harden, who was instrumental in shaping the mental toughness of athletes like Brady, Desmond Howard, Jalen Rose, and Michael Phelps, passed away due to complications from surgery. He was in his 70s.
Brady, heartbroken by the news, paid a heartfelt tribute to his former mentor, stating, “There are so many beautiful qualities Greg had that endeared him to so many people I could never have had the success I had without the time, energy, love, and support he gave me.”
The New England Patriots great had previously praised Harden as one of the most influential people in his life, adding that his teachings still resonate with him today. “What I learned from Greg is still a part of who I am today. The world needs more Greg Hardens,” Brady said in the foreword for Harden’s book.
Harden left his mark on many athletes
Harden, a mental coach at Michigan since 1986, was often referred to as the school’s “secret weapon” for helping athletes break through mental barriers and achieve greatness. His legacy extends far beyond sports, with athletes like Brady crediting him for their success on and off the field.
Desmond Howard also paid his respects, acknowledging Harden’s lasting impact on countless student-athletes over the years. “Greg brought wisdom, joy, and a calming nature to every encounter. His presence will be missed by all of us.”
J.J. McCarthy, ex-Michigan and now Minnesota Vikings quarterback, also shared what Harden meant to him. “You gave me the courage and belief as we fought hand-in-hand against the demons I’ve spent my entire life fighting. You showed me what true freedom feels like.”
Greg Harden is survived by his wife, Shelia, sister Lynette, and his three children-Brian, Victor, and Olivia. The family expressed gratitude for the thoughts and prayers and plans to celebrate Harden’s life with a future ceremony.
Harden’s death leaves a void not only at Michigan but across the sports community, as his guidance shaped some of the greatest athletes in history.
